§ Questions

Straight answers about Siri.

Common questions, no marketing filler. Updated for iOS 18, watchOS 11, and the latest HomePod and CarPlay releases.
How do I activate Siri?+

Say "Hey Siri" or hold the side button on iPhone, the Digital Crown on Apple Watch, or the top of your HomePod. On Mac, use the menu-bar icon or press the Command + Space bar shortcut you configured in Settings.

Do I have to say "Hey Siri" before every command?+

Since iOS 17 you can just say "Siri" if you have the wake phrase set to that option. You can also chain follow-up requests within a few seconds without repeating the wake word.

Does Siri work offline?+

On modern iPhones (iPhone XS and later) and Apple Silicon Macs, common commands like timers, alarms, launching apps and simple settings toggles work fully offline. Web searches, translation, and Apple Music streaming still need a connection.

Can I change Siri's voice or accent?+

Yes. Open Settings › Siri & Search › Siri Voice and pick from several voices per language, plus regional accents.

Why isn't Siri responding to "Hey Siri"?+

Check that "Listen for 'Hey Siri'" is enabled in Settings › Siri & Search, that your device isn't face-down or covered, and that microphone access is not blocked by a running app.

Can Siri control non-Apple smart home devices?+

Yes, as long as the device is HomeKit-compatible or exposed through Matter, a supported HomeKit hub, or a bridge (like Hue, Aqara or SwitchBot).

Are these commands official Apple wording?+

The phrases come from Apple documentation and community sources. Siri understands natural variations — you don't have to say them word-for-word.

Can I use Siri to send money?+

Yes, through Apple Cash. Say "Hey Siri, send $20 to Sam," and confirm with Face ID or Touch ID before the payment goes through.

Does Siri respect my privacy?+

On-device processing on modern devices means many requests never leave the phone. You can review and delete Siri history in Settings › Siri & Search › Siri & Dictation History.

Can I create my own Siri commands?+

Yes, using the Shortcuts app. Any shortcut you create can be triggered by a custom Siri phrase you choose.
